About Us

Alice Pittman Elementary School was built in 1965 in honor of Alice Pittman. Alice Pittman attended grade school and began her teaching career in Granite City, Illinois. She earned her degree from the University of Chicago and a Masters Degree from Teacher's College at Columbia University.

Miss Pittman worked as an elementary principal and supervisor in Atchison, Kansas before coming to Springfield. She began working for Springfield Public Schools in 1920 and worked as the Elementary Education Supervisor from 1924-1961, when she retired.

Our school, built in 1965, was named after this successful, pioneering woman, the only school to be named after a living person during the tenure of the superintendent, Willard Graff.
